Waterproofing your Florida Shower with Schluter Kerdi

Being a Professional Tile Contractor & Installer in Tampa, Florida I have noticed a lot of damaged showers from water damage, rot, leaks and black mold. The lack of a surface membrane is usually the main reason these problems occur.

Did you know the average residential shower gets about 4,500 gallons of water in it every year. 1 shower a day for 12 min with 2.5 gal per min. shower head = 1100″ rain annually.

Unfortunately, too many bathrooms are not protected properly with a waterproofing membrane, thereby increasing the risk of water damage, mold and mildew growth.

Professional tile contractors know the importance of a properly built shower with a bonded waterproofing membrane.

But what’s the best way to waterproof your shower ?

Take a look at Kerdi waterproofing membrane by Schluter.

Schluter Kerdi is a sheet-applied polyethylene waterproofing membrane made of pliable polyethylene that is covered on both sides with fleece anchoring webbing. The sheet is applied to the walls, corners, and floor of the shower using thin-set mortar in much the same way wallpaper is installed – without the challenge of matching patterns. Kerdi must be overlapped by a minimum of 2 inches at all seams in order to create a totally watertight system. Tiles are then set directly onto the Kerdi with thin-set mortar.

The exclusive Schluter Kerdi Drain is the critical component in the system, allowing a simple and secure connection to the Kerdi at the top of the assembly rather than below it.  The drain has a square grate – available in stainless steel, and anodized aluminum (with brass, nickel, and copper-bronze finishes) – which makes installation fast and easy.

The Kerdi Drain and Kerdi waterproofing membrane can be used with either the Schluter Shower ST tray or a mortar bed. In traditional tiled shower installations, a mortar bed, over time, becomes saturated and can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.  By using Kerdi and Kerdi Drain, the moisture is locked out of the mortar bed, thereby preventing efflorescence, as well as fungus and bacteria growth. The end result is a high-quality, maintenance-free shower enclosure.

With this proven system, The contractor or owners can be assured that the tile assembly is constructed properly and warranted against failures and be confident that their tile investment will last a lifetime.
